Patau Syndrome

Trisomy 13 is the chromosomal disorder also called as Patau Syndrome. It is often characterized by intellectual, cognitive & physical abnormalities. There is an extra copy of Chromosome 13 in the cells.

Medical Conditions

• Congenital Heart defects
• Brain or Spinal Cord abnormality
• Small/poor eye development
• Birth Deformities (Extra fingers, Cleft lip, Weak muscle & Cleft palate)
• Prone to bacterial & viral infections

Genetic Changes

• Most cases of trisomy 13 have an extra copy of Chromosome 13 in each cell in the body
• Trisomy 13 occurs when Chromosome 13 attaches to another chromosome during the formation of reproductive cell
